The Cold Hard Truth,
And a New Beginning
Business is not easy, I found out the hard way. Being an entrepreneur
is a LOT harder than people think. Having a good idea is not
enough in today’s hyper competitive market place, you must be able to
execute that idea and make a profit.
When I started One Hour Business Cards in 2000, I was a competent
graphic designer/artist with a vision of grandeur in my head of what I
wanted my company to be, unfortunately 3 years later I was broke and
bankrupt. I worked harder than I had ever worked in my life. I put all
of the profits back into the business. I worked 20 hours a day, some
days. I did all of the things
that
I thought it took to be successful and still, I failed! How could this
happen? I had an absolutely great idea and I was willing to work hard.
sys-tem-at-ic (ca. 1680) marked by
thoroughness and regularity.
Looking back and analyzing the failure I now understand what went
wrong. I did not have a SYSTEM. I started over in 2004 with the help
of my family, but this time I deliberately designed the company as a
systems dependent company, not a person dependent company. A
person dependent company is bad. That
means
my employees were dependent on me to tell them what to do, and that
meant I could never leave them alone.
It was hard at first. I was an artist after all, not a systems
engineer. I created a new work flow process, new sales process, and
new graphic design process. I changed the payment terms for my
customers. I doubled my prices and 3 months later raised them some
more. I changed absolutely everything from the way I had done it
before. People in the graphic design and printing business told me I
was crazy and “you don’t know what your doing.” But what they did not
realize and what I did not realize years before, when I started out,
was this, One Hour Business Cards is a singular unique type of
business that required a singular unique system to drive it.
In 2007 I opened my 2nd shop and I now have 4 shops between Dallas and
Houston Texas. I am confident that I can teach any competent graphic
designer the One Hour Business Cards System. From 2004
to 2008 our day to day operating system has had one major over haul
and some minor tweaks to improve the original system. My designers
spend 80% of their time doing creative work for customers and 20% of
their time printing.
In 2009 I decided to offer One Hour Business Cards Franchises to
qualified graphics designers only. Is it time you called yourself
